Stages of Archviz Development Final Stage: Evolution

Cycle: Development Stages

In collaboration with Sergey Tsypsyn
Head of CG EVENT Conference

To discuss the final article in the cycle of archviz market development, we need to turn to someone who has witnessed all its stages. Moreover, year after year, he broadcasts the fantastic metamorphoses that occur not only in the archviz market but also in the CG world at large. Meet Sergey Tsypsyn, the head of the largest CIS conference on computer graphics, CG Event!

GJ: Hello, Sergey! I associate you with Isaac Asimov in the world of CG. Before we get to the fantasy, I would like to ask, how do you assess the current state of the archviz market?

ST: Hello, thanks for the comparison! I see the archviz market as having gone through all its crazy ups and downs and eventually stabilizing in some calm growth. It’s a good market, backed by developer market money, which will always grow. Its reliability lies here, unlike, say, the film and animation markets, which live on somewhat different financial streams.

GJ: I suppose that growing competition and the development of software and hardware leave little chance for traditional forms of archviz in the future. Should we expect a "make it beautiful" button anytime soon?

ST: Probably not soon, but overall, the trend towards automation and moving closer to this button is evident. The last major technological breakthrough was the entry of game engines into the archviz arena, where V-Ray and 3dsMax used to rule. This significantly reduced the time to develop the final result. Now, generative techniques already allow for automating scene creation at some stages, and breakthroughs in lighting also simplify creating 3D scenes for further work. There’s a race for automation and a desire to create, if not one, then a set of beautiful buttons that will speed up many stages.

GJ: I occasionally visit your Facebook page when I want to read something new from the world of computer graphics. Do you follow the general trend in CG and archviz news in particular?

ST: There are several trends.

  1. Game engines invading the territories of neighboring industries — postproduction, archviz, real-time presentations, and even show business.
  2. Gamification of content. Content should be as least boring as possible. I remember the old archviz works, inducing boredom with their endless fly-throughs. Then came animation styling, then cinematic editing. Now, I think, we should expect game mechanics in once solid markets, including archviz.
  3. VR will create an entirely new market for archviz. A separate big topic.
  4. Asset thinking. One-time modeling will decrease in volume, and libraries of assets (not only models but also animations, textures, setups) will grow.
  5. Virtual production. Another world with its own laws.
  6. Collaborative content creation and cloud technologies. Look at Nvidia Omniverse. It’s not so much a product as a forward-looking manifesto on content creation of the future and creating duplicates of our world in various fields.
  7. Generative technologies.

GJ: I observed how hard but ultimately successful the online CG Event was in 2020. In spite of various viruses, I ask: do you plan to return the conference to an offline format, and if so, when?

ST: Of course, I plan to! The question is when. Unfortunately, now, despite the general optimism in the press (before elections?), the rules for holding events for more than 500 people make offline events extremely risky. Officials have armed themselves with contradictory formulations, and any inspections are always against the organizer. There’s a high probability that in 2021 it will be online again, as sad as it is for me. It’s sad both financially and in a human sense, I miss that atmosphere…

Thank you, Sergey, for the detailed comments! There’s a lot to think about. And personally, I wish you to return the atmosphere of the Event to its previous offline course as soon as possible. We miss it too!
