Rapid Architectural Presentation

Architecture: Diller Scofidio + Renfro
Project: Barbican concert hall
Location: London, England

An architectural or conceptual presentation is a format for presenting architecture, usually assembled by architects themselves in a collage mode. The basis is a blank shape, often simplified, which subsequently acquires details in post-production. The main characteristic of a conceptual presentation is the use of semi-transparent or silhouette elements (people\trees).

Pros
  • Quick
  • Conveys the essence of the architectural idea

Cons
  • Lack of photorealism. Conceptual presentation is less perceivable by the real consumer. For sales, a photorealistic (marketing) presentation is required.

It is important to note that some architects, using quite limited tools, create incredibly attractive things (as with today’s project). Also, collaborations with a conceptual presentation are sometimes necessary to show, for example, semi-transparent boxes as part of the planned development.
