The Tretyakov Gallery has made a real gift by assembling a large collection of Roerich’s works as part of a single exhibition. My art school teacher, twenty years ago, instilled in me the works of Roerich as a foundation, not only for artistic taste but also for upbringing. I am immensely grateful to Sergey Anatolyevich for this.

The exhibition allows one to slightly grasp the scale of Roerich’s activities. Nikolai Konstantinovich literally traveled around the world. No joke, he covered 25,000 km during just one Central Asian expedition. Despite spending many years away from his homeland and each of his journeys adding a new layer to his works, it is practically impossible to confuse the artist with others. Studying works created in Europe, America, India, and especially in Russia, I can’t shake off a feeling of something indescribably native.

Roerich’s works are perhaps the best way to delve into Russian culture. Learning a language and culture is not based on mechanical memorization of words and grammar but should start with basics like children’s fairy tales. This way, you truly start to think in the same language as a native speaker.

Be sure to visit this exhibition!
