For the last 5 days, I’ve been meditating while assembling a new server rack. I had to sell my old 42U rack because it wouldn’t fit in the elevator. The new one is more compact at 22U. It neatly accommodates an XLATX workstation, a 3-kilowatt UPS, and an 8-slot NAS. You might ask: why go through all this trouble? The answer is simple: I prefer my hardware to be in a server room. This setup minimizes dust, creates the right microclimate, and eliminates excess noise. To ensure the latter works well, I’m soundproofing the rack both inside and out. If you’re interested, I’ll share photos of the final result once I finish assembling it.
The only downside is the cables; they need to be long enough to place the rack away from the workspace. This issue was resolved at the office: I have a rich collection of 25-meter optical and copper cables. However, this pleasure doesn’t come cheap, and I’ll highlight the Thunderbolt for connecting the NAS to the Mac separately. The only one that worked is a 3-meter cable from Apple. Cheaper options either disconnect or don’t work at all. I found only one alternative brand online that makes Thunderbolt optics, but testing a 5-meter cable for 50,000 rubles isn’t appealing.
The assembly process was accompanied by watching cool guys from "Circumnavigators" — they document their yacht round-the-world journey. Fantastic content with exotic locations and quality visuals. I recommend subscribing and watching in your spare time. Just be careful — it’s addictive!
This brings me to today’s selection of photos. They’ve been bookmarked for a while, but I hadn’t found the right moment to publish them. Inspired by sailing adventures and in this heat, there couldn’t be a better time. Enjoy the viewing!
