Architecture: Santiago Calatrava
Project: UAE Pavilion
Browsing through Meta Facebook’s feed over the past few months, I’ve repeatedly come across posts about the "Russia" pavilion at Expo 2020. Mr. Choban has done a commendable job, and there’s much to talk about there. However, to write a full-fledged review of this architecture, I believe it’s a matter of honor to see it in person and shoot it myself. The work schedule is unlikely to allow this before the New Year, so for now, I suggest exploring equally intriguing material.
I have previously written that my main architectural favorite is Calatrava. It was especially pleasing to learn that he designed the pavilion for the hosts of the Expo. Besides the recognizable engineering and architectural style, the building’s shape embodies the flight of the Falcon, a symbol of the UAE. This is further aided by the ability to alter the appearance of the project through hydraulic carbon "wings": in their open state, they function as a lantern and solar panels. Bravo, Maestro!
