Collecting Small-Scale Architecture | 01

Artist: Vincent Leroy
Project: Eccentric Lenses
Geo: Bali, Indonesia

I’ve been meaning to start a little series on small-scale architecture. An analogy keeps coming to mind: if architecture is the timber being planed and the masterplan is the workbench, then landscape design is the shavings scattered around it. Some of those curls are especially beautiful. Those are the ones we’ll collect, from expressive decoration to purely practical bits of engineering.
GORK Eccentric Lenses by Vincent Leroy: Fresnel lenses with offset axes mounted on slender supports
First up is a kinetic installation by Vincent Leroy on Bali’s rice terraces. A cluster of Fresnel lenses, each rotating around an offset axis and moving with the wind. Mountains, terraces and sky fragment and turn upside down, making it seem as though the landscape is moving rather than the object. It serves absolutely no practical purpose, yet somehow draws tourists in :)
