A Stadium from Middle-Earth

Architecture: ON-A
Project: FC Barcelona football stadium
Location: Barcelona, Spain

Architects from ON-A are clearly fans of Tolkien; there’s no other way to explain their desire to transform a stadium into a dwelling for Hobbits.

Seriously speaking, the concept emerged due to the standard of 9 m² of greenery per person (currently about 6 m² in Barcelona). The studio also wanted to demonstrate an option for integrating urban environments into park spaces, and, if successful, replicate it in other green areas.

The idea is intriguing, but I assume it will require some unimaginable expenses. Besides the fact that they want to hide the stadium itself underground, all the engineering infrastructure, parking, and entertainment facilities will go there too. And the maintenance costs… It’s utopian but interesting.
