Belarus Mir Castle

Part 2

Despite the castle’s name after the town of Mir, the events that unfolded here over time can hardly be called peaceful.

The fortress was founded by Prince Yuri Ilinich in the early 16th century. For that time, walls three meters thick and towers 25 meters high were quite remarkable. The appearance of the castle changed, absorbing the epochs and trends of its owners. This is clearly visible in the multilayered facade, where one can observe illogical decorative elements and fragmented renovations. I saw something similar on the facade of Bratislava Castle in Slovakia, where fragments of arched windows unexpectedly appear on the smooth surface of the fortress walls, which the reconstructors preserved to their credit.

After Prince Yuri, the estate passed to the Radziwiłł family, known to us from the castle in Nesvizh. There is a belief that both fortresses were connected by an underground tunnel, where the Radziwiłłs hid all their treasures.

P. S. By the way, the cat on the throne from the announcement was photographed in the courtyard of Mir Castle.
