Materials

Cycle: Quality Criteria

In the realm of 3ds Max, if there were medals for the versatility of tools, materials would certainly take first place. The reason is simple — a realistic image demands physically accurate materials. Reflections, transparency, bump mapping, etc., encompass nearly hundreds of parameters that must be kept in mind and applied as needed to achieve the desired realism.

Working in 3D, one might not consider the complex challenge faced by the pioneers of render engines who digitized the physical properties of materials. However, I believe anyone who has delved into 3D has, while walking down the street, found themselves pondering how to replicate certain materials.

Every artist has their own asset library of materials. Yet, in my experience, there hasn’t been a single project where I didn’t have to adjust or completely rebuild materials.

Materials are arguably the most apparent quality criterion, and poor execution can be glaringly obvious.
