GORK JOURNAL

Top Significant Buildings of the 21st Century…

…According to Dezeen. The authors of this popular resource published a survey to choose the main object among 25 structures built over the past quarter-century. The selection is subjective, although in our field, thinking in terms of rankings, it can’t be otherwise. In my opinion, there aren’t even a dozen that potentially match the status of the title. However, I will highlight a few:

  1. Walt Disney Concert Hall | Frank Gehry | 2003
  2. Madrid-Barajas Airport | RSHP and Estudio Lamela | 2006
  3. Oslo Opera House | Snøhetta | 2007
  4. Burj Khalifa | SOM | 2010
  5. CCTV Headquarters | OMA | 2012
  6. Bosco Verticale | Boeri Studio | 2014
  7. UTEC Lima Campus | Grafton Architects | 2015
  8. Apple Park | Foster | 2017
  9. Amager Bakke | BIG | 2018

Each project on the list above has its badge in people’s minds, and importantly, not just among those involved in architecture. The engineering university campus in Lima, Peru, was a revelation for me. I somehow overlooked it (if you did too, check out additional photos in the stories). The brutalism of this airy monolith will leave you indifferent, especially considering the terrain on which this structure stands.

PS Share your thoughts in the comments about which project you would choose from this selection or even outside it as the most significant project of the first quarter of the 21st century.
