GORK JOURNAL

Nizhny Novgorod

Alongside searching for angles in the forest, I face another tremendously challenging task — photographing my hometown. If you like, call it Gorky.

I’ve noticed a pattern: the longer you spend in one location, the more blurred your vision becomes, ceasing to notice the wonders around.

In Nizhny Novgorod, there’s plenty to see, especially after the major reconstruction for its 800th anniversary. The historical "upper part" of the city can delight with its numerous low-rise buildings, among which are stunning examples of wooden architecture.

Unfortunately, efforts to preserve the city started late, and many sites couldn’t be saved. It’s worth mentioning the deteriorating architectural council under the chief architect Popov👋, who approves the construction of colorful cubist buildings in the downtown area, in a so-called "constructivist" style.

PS My friends often confuse Veliky Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod. For reference: both are equally distant (±500km) from Moscow, only Nizhny is to the east, and Veliky to the northwest.
