Project: Glasshouse Theatre

Wavy glass facades are not a unique technique. In 2021, SANAA completed the renovation of La Samaritaine in Paris: there’s an article about it here. The difference is that in Paris, the wave is part of a dense historical development, continuing its rhythm. In Brisbane, there is no such development: the wave does not dissolve into the surroundings but creates a new spatial accent.
The foyer’s shell is made up of 217 unique curved glass panels, the same ones used for the Apple campus pavilions in Cupertino. The facade seems to invite passersby to observe what is happening inside the theater.
The project’s concept was inspired by a poem by Lilla Watson — an Aboriginal elder who wrote about the area where the theater now stands. The translation of the title is unexpected: "the place of water rats."
"They looked at the river, at the ripples on its surface raised by wind and tide, and at the fish swimming in the water," writes Watson.
It’s interesting to consider how such brand storytelling would take root in Russia.
